MindsEye review – a dystopian future that plays like it's from 2012

The Guardian

It's pretty much a straight copy of the original: a huge soap bubble, half sunk into the desert floor, with its surface turned into a gigantic TV. Occasionally you'll pull up near the Sphere while driving an electric vehicle made by Silva, the megacorp that controls this world. You'll sometimes come to a stop just as an advert for an identical Silva EV plays out on the huge curved screen overhead. The doubling effect can be slightly vertigo-inducing. At these moments, I truly get what MindsEye is trying to do.

Elon Musk showcases army of 30,000 'Optimus' robots designed to help with household chores including 'babysitting your kids' ... drawing comparisons to dystopian future depicted in I, Robot

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Elon Musk has showcased his army of 30,000 Tesla Optimus robots that are designed to help with household chores, prompting people to draw comparisons to the dystopian future depicted in I, Robot. In shocking and impressive footage, the humanoid robots were seen stiffly walking in single file across a stage while viewers stood jaw-dropped on the sidelines. Musk said attendees could walk up to the Optimus robots who would do things like serve drinks. 'At scale, you should be able to buy an Optimus robot for 20,000 to 30,000,' he said. 'It can walk your dog, mow your lawn, get the groceries, just be your friend.'

Initial Development and Evaluation of the Creative Artificial Intelligence through Recurring Developments and Determinations (CAIRDD) System

Straub, Jeremy, Johnson, Zach

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Computer system creativity is a key step on the pathway to artificial general intelligence (AGI). It is elusive, however, due to the fact that human creativity is not fully understood and, thus, it is difficult to develop this capability in software. Large language models (LLMs) provide a facsimile of creativity and the appearance of sentience, while not actually being either creative or sentient. While LLMs have created bona fide new content, in some cases - such as with harmful hallucinations - inadvertently, their deliberate creativity is seen by some to not match that of humans. In response to this challenge, this paper proposes a technique for enhancing LLM output creativity via an iterative process of concept injection and refinement. Initial work on the development of the Creative Artificial Intelligence through Recurring Developments and Determinations (CAIRDD) system is presented and the efficacy of key system components is evaluated.

AI wars: The dystopian future of a society bereft of reason

#artificialintelligence

As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly entwined with our daily lives, the potential challenges and consequences of a world where AI technology surpasses human intelligence have become critical topics of discussion. The AI Wars depict a dystopian future in which the relentless pursuit of ever more sophisticated technology has driven a wedge between humans, resulting in a society bereft of reason. We will reference a recent petition signed by notable tech leaders calling for a pause on major AI developments and discuss the importance of addressing the ethical implications of AI, fostering a dialogue to ensure a future guided by reason and empathy. AI has brought remarkable advancements to fields such as healthcare, education, and transportation. While these breakthroughs offer numerous benefits, we must also recognize our growing dependency on technology.

Adversarial AI and the dystopian future of tech

#artificialintelligence

We are excited to bring Transform 2022 back in-person July 19 and virtually July 20 - August 3. Join AI and data leaders for insightful talks and exciting networking opportunities. AI is a rapidly growing technology that has many benefits for society. However, as with all new technologies, misuse is a potential risk. One of the most troubling potential misuses of AI can be found in the form of adversarial AI attacks. In an adversarial AI attack, AI is used to manipulate or deceive another AI system maliciously.

The Anti-Tech Dystopia of "Dune"

#artificialintelligence

Life during the Covid-19 pandemic would be even more difficult without the Internet and automation, making this year timely for the upcoming "Dune" film to portray a distant future where humanity is devastated by our dependence on machines. Director Dennis Villeneuve is set to release his adaptation of the science fiction epic on October 22, both on HBO Max and in movie theaters. The release was delayed from last December to make it safer for people to view and hear the space fantasy in theaters. WarnerMedia aims to distribute Villeneuve's vision of the first "Dune" novel in two films, but has not yet scheduled a release date for the second film after the first half is released. Frank Herbert's "Dune" novel begins in the far distant future, thousands of years after humans were enslaved by robots, fought a revolutionary crusade and banned artificial intelligence with a new anti-tech religion.

Blockchain to the Rescue: AI in a Post-Pandemic Dystopia - Herbert R. Sim

#artificialintelligence

In this editorial, we take a look at a post-pandemic dystopia where AI and robotics engulf the flow of labour, talent and the economy. These are our forecasts of an economy optimised by artificial intelligence and ripened by robotics. Robots' infiltration of the workforce doesn't occur at a steady, gradual pace. Instead, automation happens in bursts, concentrated especially in bad times such as the current Covid 19-induced economic paralysis, when humans become relatively more expensive as firms' revenues rapidly decline. At these moments, employers shed less-skilled workers and replace them with technology and higher-skilled workers, which increases labor productivity as a recession tapers off.

Top 15 AI and Robotics Movies Showcasing Our Future Ahead

#artificialintelligence

Nowadays we are hearing a lot of buzz around artificial intelligence or AI and robotics. We have even felt their presence in our surroundings in one or the other way. The technology sounds new but its seeds have been long sown. Do you know that AI found its way into film-business around 100 years ago? Yes, the 1927 release Metropolis depicts AI that takes the form of a humanoid robot with an intent on taking over the titular mega-city by inciting chaos.

4 ways AI is helping musicians, and the entire music industry

#artificialintelligence

When we give a machine values and it solves a calculation for us, that's simply computing. When we give a machine data and it learns from its experiences and then makes recommendations, that's artificial intelligence. So what happens when we give AI one of the most human of art forms: music? Quite a bit, as it turns out. AI uses machine learning models to produce new patterns and correlations based on the data it was trained from.

The 'uncanny valley' and why robots like the Terminator are so terrifying

Daily Mail - Science & tech

If watching the Terminator left you cowering behind the sofa, you are not alone. When it comes to cyborgs, robots, and AI powered digital helpers the creepiest ones are those which look most like us. A study about artificial intelligence has found'humanoid' robots like CP30 in Star Wars are really quite likeable. But if they look too much like people, robots tend to be disliked and mistrusted - perhaps because of a fear they could replace us in a dystopian future. This phenomenon is known as the'uncanny valley' - the unsettling feeling we get from robots and digital agents that are human-like but still somehow different.
